Asceticism: practicing strict self-denial
Asceticism can be explained in part by returning to the factor of self-hate arising out of guilt. The imposition of harsh conditions on one's life may be for some persons a way of 'cleansing' the soul, a means of purifying the self. It is another way of paying for real or imagined 'crimes'.
